Music Bed – Underscore

A music bed, also known as underscore, is a term that originates from the radio. It is understood as the background music or jingle behind an announcement, for example. Although both terms are basically synonyms, the difference lies therein, in that the latter is background music specifically created for a project, usually a movie or a TV show. Such music is usually constant in mood, and is played as a loop.

Examples of these are a number of songs and music themes from the 1980s. MTV was relatively new at the time, so that songs were promoted through soap operas. Kissing scene? There was a theme or a song people identified it with, as was the case of Bo and Hope in the long running American soap opera Days of Our Lives.

Source music

Source music is the antonym to classical film score

Film score in that sense is called “off“-music, because it is coming out of the off.  An example: A romantic scene of lovers at a lonely beach is embedded in music for strings, whereas you can’t find any string orchestra at this lonely beach. 🙂

In contrast, source music is “on“-music, that is music which is noticed by the characters in the film story. Thus source music takes place in the reality of the film. Some examples might be, that the characters go to a concert or clubbing, the radio or tv is on etc…. or there is a string ensemble sitting on a lonely beach. 🙂

In a normal case of licensing source music artist repertoire is suitable, but in some cases you can also use production music (e.g. for music in a disco).

Rock music

Rock music evolved from the genre Rock ‘n roll, that arised on its part out of the combination of the genres hillbilly and blues. The instrumentation of rock music consists of one or more acoustic or electric guitars, an e-bass and drums. Additionally it can be supplemented by piano, organ or synthesizer and also by wind instruments. Contrary to the rock ‘n roll the eighth notes are played binarily in the rock music. After the magazine “Rolling Stone” the title “(I can’t get no) Satisfaction” of the Rolling Stones is considered to be the hour of birth of rock music.

In our Proud Music Library you can find lots of tracks to license of the genre rock. In particular of the subgenres classic rock, crossover rock, hard rock, instrumental rock, heavy metal, industrial metal and new metal.

Music licensing for computer games

If producing a computer game you need to decide whether to license existing music or if it is necessary to produce an individual soundtrack. The licensing of music in place of producing already is a common and timesaving way in different game genres.

It depends on the special type of a game, if the use of production music is possible and beneficial. It is more difficult to find Ingame-tracks or music for cut-scenes than to take any undisturbing and easy themes for displays, menus etc.  Adventure games usually marked by individual scoring in contrast to edutainment or casual games, where the probability of a favorable licensing of existing music tracks is higher and where the choice is bigger.

If you are searching for licensing music for your computer game, the Proud Music Library contains a large repertoire of music tracks applicable for games.  Just contact us with the briefing of your game and we will propose potential titles and compile an individual licensing offer. Therefor its helpful, if you can give us some titles of our large content which are roughly what you imagine.

Jingle

A jingle is often described as a short slogan with a memorable melody. Used in broadcast on radio, but also on television commercials. A jingle is great, when the consumers remember it – maybe even their entire life.

This means that a jingle has to be quiete emotional for his aspired aim. E.g.: Jingles for a sports-show should be eventful, motivated and “sappy”. A jingle for a news-show should be splendid, mighty and at times elevated.

Who becomes the licensee when an agency researches music for its customers?

You can buy the license as a producer for your customer (invoice goes to you) and instruct us to register directly your customers as licensees in the license (the rights go to your customer). Or you can become licensee yourself (invoice and rights go to you).

The WAVE file format is a container format. It is used for the digital storage of audio data. It is based on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) defined by Microsoft for Windows. A WAVE file contains information about its format before the audio data.

It usually contains so-called PCM raw data. These are time-discrete and value-discrete representations of the temporal course of a signal. The quality of the sound then depends on the sampling rate (number of samples per time unit) and the resolution (bit depth). For compressed data, the method is also relevant, e.g. ADPCM or MP3.

In contrast to the similar AIFF format, WAV does not store ID3 tags.

How do I get the best search results?

Three steps that lead to success

Choose only 2-3 attributes which are the most important to you at first. If there are too many results, you can finetune your search by adding further attributes. If you are searching for an attribute combination and the database cannot find any matching tracks it will ignore more and more attributes from right to left in the search interface, starting with tempo, then arrangement, then instruments and so on.
