When?
Initially, Easy Listening was used conveniently in the mid 1920s on Atlantic crossings of luxury liners as background or dinner music. The music was supposed to distract and relax. Then, it was exclusively instrumental music. Since the 1990s Easy Listening has become a valued music genre, and it has influenced a significant number of musical styles such as Lounge, Ambient, and Smooth Jazz.
Why?
Easy Listening music is especially suited for films in which the music support scenes which want to express irrelevance or relaxation, or stating just that thwarted (eg:. Elevator scene from the movie "Blues Brothers" Who does not know, please "google": -)). In commercials Easy Listening is also used rather humorous to create a scene that represents naivety, simplicity or an ideal world.

"easy leastening music"
Curiously enough, there are people who are not looking for easy listening music, but for "easy leastening music". The latter does not exist. Leastening has nothing to do with listening and the search for easy leastening is rather an expression of an at least implied orthographic deficit ;-) But Hey... Nobody is perfect.
