The Chinese or Sinitic languages form one of the two primary branches of the Sino-Tibetan language family, the other primary branch being the Tibetan-Burmese languages. Chinese languages are spoken today by approximately 1.3 billion people, most of whom live in the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan). In many countries, especially in Southeast Asia, there are larger Chinese-speaking minorities. The Chinese language with the largest number of speakers is Mandarin. It is the basis of High Chinese, which is also simply called "Chinese".
