Funk is a form of music characterized by its fast, driving rhythms, soulful melodies and distinct bass line. Funk is usually produced by live instruments and is characterized by its danceable mood and groovy sounds.

The roots of funk lie in the R&B, soul and jazz music of the 1950s and 1960s. Artists such as James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, and Earth, Wind & Fire shaped the genre with their fast, driving rhythms, soulful melodies, and distinct bass lines, and were considered the forerunners of funk.

In the 1970s, funk was popularized by artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic, The Sugarhill Gang, and Chic. These artists were known for their danceable vibe and groovy sounds.

One of Funk's most style-defining albums is "There's a Riot Goin' On" by Sly & the Family Stone, released in 1971. This album was characterized by its fast, driving rhythms, soulful melodies and distinct bass lines, and became a classic of the genre.

Funk is particularly well suited for licensing in movies, TV shows, and commercials that want to convey a danceable or groovy mood.

One of the most style-defining albums of funk is "Risqué" by Chic, from 1979. This album became a classic of the genre. Chic is a U.S. band formed in the 1970s by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, known for their funk hits such as "Le Freak," "Good Times" and "I Want Your Love."

Other well-known artists of the funk genre include The Time, Prince, George Clinton and Tower of Power. One of the most style-defining albums of funk is "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, released in 1982. This album was characterized by its fast, driving rhythms, soulful melodies and distinct bass lines, and became a classic of the genre.

In the 1980s, funk was further popularized by artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince and Earth, Wind & Fire.
