Comedy usually consists of rehearsed numbers, which are often performed the same or similar way over years, but spontaneous, unprepared elements can also be found in the performances. Some stand-up comedians also perform completely improvised numbers, but this is rather the exception and also requires a certain preparatory basis, which makes it possible to fall back on certain patterns, which seem to be invented in the performance at the moment. Nevertheless, the spontaneous element of stand-up comedy should not be confused with the improvisational comedy section itself, which is based on elements from the Stegreiftheater, in which an ensemble of actors develops spontaneous stories according to pre-rehearsed patterns.
The boundaries between stand-up comedy and cabaret are fluid (whereby cabaret usually includes socio-critical content). Acting and theatrical elements are now also to be found in stand-up comedy. The spectrum ranges from comic everyday situations to pointed depictions of people, stories and public events to complete, full-length productions.
